Digital Smile Design

Nowadays, more and more people are concerned about their esthetic. A perfect smile can affect a person’s overall appearance, making them to have more confidence when meeting with people. Recently, Digital Smile Design (DSD) has become more and more popular, providing more predictable results for every patient.

What is Digital Smile Design

DSD is a dental treatment planning tool that helps the dental providers to have improved diagnostic vision, better outcome predictability and improved communication between the providers and patients. With DSD, the dental providers would be able to design a better and beautiful smile customized to every patient and be able to deliver the treatment planning confidently to the patients. With the patients’ complete understanding, they could perform the dental treatments efficiently.

How does DSD work?

When the patients have decided to make their smile look better, the dental providers will communicate with them to understand their expectations and needs from the treatment. Then, the providers will take photos of them and their teeth. Later, all the required photos will be imported into the DSD software.

Then, the software will help the dental provider to analyze the patients’ dental and facial proprotions thoroughly. There are various forms and shapes that can be chosen from the digital library which suits best for the patient. This gives the patients a quick glimpse into what they can expect at the end of the treatment.

Next, the providers will explain to the patients the problem lists. A thorough treatment plan is created based on the problem lists and what dental treatments are needed to achieve the final outcome. The treatment can range from simple restorative procedures, orthodontic treatment to orthognathic surgery.

Case Sample

First, patient is required to take photos of their smile.

Patient with smile
Patient with retracted smile

Next, photos are imported into the DSD software. The providers identify the patient’s smile issues. Then, the software is used to analyze their dental and facial proportion, thus designing a better smile design customized to every patient.

Patient’s smile design
Patient’s close up smile design
Patient’s smile design simulation

Lastly, the final outcome of the smile design is then displayed on the software. Treatment plan based on the design is then discussed with the patient.

What makes DSD unique?

After smile design simulation

Although digital imaging and diagnostic mock-up can show to the patients how will they look like at the end of the treatment, they have their limitations in terms predictability. With DSD, the providers are able to tell the patients exactly what their smile will look like because final outcome of the patient’s smile will be displayed in the software and the accuracy of the the final outcome is high. With these, miscommunication between the patients and providers can be avoided as they will be on the same page.

Who is a best candidate for DSD?

Good news is everyone is a good candidate as long as they want to have a better and beautiful smile.

So, if you have always wanted to do something about your smile, this is the opportunity to bring up your wants and needs.

MBrace Clear Aligners

What is Mbrace®?

MBrace is a clear aligner used to correct misaligned teeth with ease and comfort. It is clear and removable which makes it almost unnoticeable by others and convenient to use. The aligners are custom-made digitally and fabricated individually to ensure a perfect and accurate fit for your teeth.

how does MBrace® work?

MBrace aligner is designed in a way that it does not require any wires or attachments to align your teeth. Just simply wear a series of aligners to exert gradual force against the teeth at different treatment stages to slowly move the teeth towards the final tooth position.
Patients are advised to wear every set of aligners for 2 weeks, at least 22 hours a day before moving to the next aligners.

Mbrace Aligner

treatment duration

A more severe teeth condition will take longer time to treat, as more aligners are required over the entire course of treatment.
Typically, MBrace treatment vary from anywhere between 6 to 24 months. Below illustrate the average treatment period based on the severity of the case.

What We Can Treat

MBrace® can help with the following conditions:

Spacing

Too much space between teeth.
An esthetic problem that can also compromise the effectiveness of chewing.

Crowding

Not enough spacing between teeth; teeth overlap.
Can make it hard to brush and floss, thus leading to tooth decay and gum disease.

Midline Discrepancy

Teeth off center; center of upper and lower teeth are not aligned.
Can be an indication of improper bite, which may lead to pain and further issues.

Tipping

Teeth tip outward or inward; teeth tilt at an angle, or lean forward or backward.
Can cause other teeth to shift creating crowding and an improper bite.

Rotation

Teeth are tirned clockwise or counterclockwise.

Can make proper oral hygiene difficult and may lead to tooth decay.

Traditional porcelain veneers vs Direct Porcelain Veneer –Duo:PCH ™ (or formerlly known as Lumineers)

DUO-PCH-Logo

Once referred to as Lumineers, Duo:PCH ™ are a special type of veneers that can be applied over teeth to repair small cracks or chips, hide discoloration or correct imperfections. Just like traditional veneers, Duo:PCH ™ can reshape the appearance of your smile. The main difference between Duo:PCH ™ and standard porcelain veneers concerns the material used to create them. Duo:PCH ™ are manufactured from a special porcelain – patented Cerinate porcelain – that is much thinner than the porcelain that is used in the making of traditional veneers. The thickness of Duo:PCH ™ is similar to that of contact lenses. While veneers placement is normally a irreversible procedure, with Duo:PCH ™ the procedure is so less invasive that it may often be reversible.

The main benefit of choosing Duo:PCH ™ is that they require minimal – if any – grinding or shaving so your natural teeth will pretty much be left intact. Traditional veneers require more tooth reduction and many patients are not convinced they want veneers for ever. Duo:PCH ™ are more suitable for patients who only wish to try dental veneers for a short period of time. Patients with serious problems however tend to prefer traditional porcelain veneers. Duo:PCH ™ are a great solution for slightly misaligned, stained, discolored or chipped teeth. Make sure you find an experienced cosmetic dentist who can properly place your Duo:PCH ™. You can easily switch from Duo:PCH ™ to traditional veneers whenever you consider yourself ready for a more permanent solution to your smile problem.

Aesthetic-Dentistry
A lady came to our clinic complained that she wanted an immediate replacement of her front teeth that were just extracted a week ago due to gum problem. She said that she didn’t dare to go out of her house due to her disfigured appearance. She was sad and embarrassed

Pre-op01 Pre-op03
Pre-op02

There reason why she lost her front teeth was due to deep-bite (her lower teeth were biting at the back of her upper front teeth) which result in stripping of the gum on the palate (traumatic occlusion). Eventually, this lead to periodontitis (gum disease) and loosening of her teeth. Sadly, she had to have her upper teeth removed.
After examination and assessment of her teeth, we came out with a few treatment plans:

  1. Correction of the occlusion (biting) by means of orthodontic treatment followed by orthognathic surgery to correct her jaw misalignment — which will takes her 2-4 years
  2. Dental implant to replace the missing front teeth — Required bone block to build back resorbed  alveolar ridge and the implant might not be lasting due to the occlusion problem
  3. A dental bridge from her canine to the other canine (a 6 unit bridge)

After discussed with her, she decided to go for the third option – a dental bridge. She preferred the zicornia type of material for aesthetic reason.
For a mean time to allow gum healing, we prepare a ‘vacuum formed’ denture which she used to cover the missing teeth.

Denture01

Final outcome, a 6 unit zicornia bridge was cemented onto her teeth…

Possible problems/risks for a dental bridge:

  1. Fracture bridge
  2. Possibility of devitalizing the teeth during preparation of teeth ending up needed root canal treatment.

A young lady came to our clinic wanted all the gaps between her front teeth to be closed. She stopped her braces treatment about a year ago (due to studying oversea) leaving all her front teeth moving by themselves creating gaps and misalignment..

Porcelain-Crown02 Porcelain-Crown01

After examination and assessment of her teeth, we came out with a few treatment plans:

  1. Restart orthodontic treatment /braces again (Require time)
  2. Resin composite veneer or full porcelain veneer on right lateral and central incisor only (Imbalance of the width for the front central incisors)
  3. Crown all the front teeth.

After discussed with her, we finally decided to have her  upper four incisors crowned and resin composite on both of her upper canine to reduce the distance between the canines to accommodate the incisors.

Porcelain-Crown14 Porcelain-Crown16

Possible problems/risks for crowding the teeth:

  1. The front teeth will look sightly bigger
  2. Possible of devitalizing the teeth during preparation of teeth ending up needed root canal treatment.
